The Gift of Presence
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us). – Matthew 1:23
As Christmas Eve draws close, there’s a warmth in the air that no string of lights or wrapped gift can fully capture. This night, above all others, is about presence, God’s presence with us.
When Jesus came, it wasn’t just to observe humanity from a distance, He came to be with us, Immanuel, “God with us.” He chose to step into the mess of life, into our struggles and brokenness, to bring us hope that doesn’t fade and a peace that stands through every storm.
Tonight, we can reflect on this gift: a Savior who didn’t just come to fix us but to walk alongside us, to feel what we feel, to be near in the joys and pains of life. In a season often focused on finding the perfect gifts and checking off to-do lists, it’s easy to overlook the most powerful gift we’ve received, the gift of God’s presence. This isn’t something that can be boxed up or tied with a bow. It’s the daily, quiet assurance that we are never alone, and we never will be.
This Christmas, maybe the greatest gift you can offer others, and even yourself, is presence. Rather than striving for perfection, spend this time truly present with loved ones, letting the love of Christ flow through you. Just as God chose to be with us, we’re called to be with each other in love, in grace, and in compassion.
So tonight, let your heart rest in the beauty of His presence. In the stillness of Christmas Eve, remember that Jesus came to bring light into dark places and peace into troubled hearts. Let His love quiet the noise around you, and let gratitude fill you as you choose to be fully present.
