Healing from the Past
"He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, according to all that David his father had done." - 2 Kings 18:3
Hezekiah’s story is proof that your past doesn’t have to define your future. He didn’t come from a picture-perfect family. In fact, his father, King Ahaz, left behind a legacy of evil. Ahaz was everything a godly example shouldn’t be. He abandoned the ways of the Lord, indulged in pagan practices, and led the nation into chaos. Hezekiah grew up surrounded by the dysfunction and brokenness of his father’s choices. The odds were stacked against him before he even began.
Maybe you can relate. Perhaps your upbringing wasn’t ideal, or the people who were supposed to guide you let you down. Like Hezekiah, you might feel the weight of inherited struggles—unhealthy patterns, bad habits, or wounds from those closest to you. It’s easy to think that what you’ve seen and experienced has already set your course. But Hezekiah shows us it doesn’t have to be that way.
For Hezekiah, turning his life around started with healing. He didn’t ignore the pain of his past or let it control his decisions. He made a choice to break free from the cycles he had inherited. He rejected the example of his father and pursued a life that honored God. Instead of letting bitterness or despair take root, he sought the truth about who God is and allowed that truth to transform him.
Healing isn’t about pretending the past didn’t happen. It’s about acknowledging it, surrendering it to God, and allowing Him to lead you forward. When you decide to break free from the patterns that hold you back, you not only change your life but also set a new course for those who come after you.
No matter what kind of hand life has dealt you, it’s not too late to play it well. The past may shape you, but it doesn’t have to define you. Like Hezekiah, you can trust God to help you heal, rise above the pain, and step into a future that honors Him. Let today be the day you choose healing and begin a new chapter.
