Facing Trauma with Truth
"The truth will set you free." - John 8:32
If you have been following along with us the last few days, I know you might be thinking, “It’s easy to say I should bury my trauma, but you don’t know what I’ve been through. You don’t know the pain, the betrayal, or the scars I carry.” And you’re right, I don’t know. But what I do know is this: burying your trauma doesn’t mean ignoring it or pretending it never happened. Healing doesn’t begin with denial. It begins with truth.
Trauma hurts because it’s real. The pain you feel is valid, and the impact it’s had on your life is significant. But here’s something you may not have considered: the power of healing begins with becoming aware of how your trauma shaped you, both then and now. When Hezekiah buried his father, he wasn’t erasing the past. He was confronting it. He understood the ways his father’s actions influenced his life, but he refused to let that pain dictate his future.
Healing from trauma starts with understanding it. Not just what happened to you, but what happened inside you because of it. Trauma expert Gabor Maté explains that trauma isn’t caused by the external event itself. Instead, it’s caused by the messages you told yourself in response to that event. Two people can experience the same painful situation, yet their responses can lead to entirely different outcomes.
You might have told yourself, “This is my fault. I’m not worthy. I’ll never be good enough.” Those messages can imprison you long after the event is over. But when you become aware of those inner narratives, you can begin to challenge them. You can start telling yourself a new story: “This wasn’t about me. I am not defined by what happened to me. I am loved. I am valuable.”
Being trauma-informed means being trauma-aware. It’s about recognizing how your experiences shaped you without letting them control you. God invites you into healing, not by ignoring your pain, but by shining His truth on it. The more you confront the lies your pain taught you, the freer you’ll be to embrace the future He has for you.
You don’t have to stay trapped in the messages of your past. Let God rewrite your story. Healing begins with truth, and the truth will set you free.
