A Good Idea Isn’t Always a God Idea
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night." - Psalm 1:1-2
Not every idea that seems good is part of God’s plan for your life. It’s easy to be swayed by advice from well-meaning people or by opportunities that appear perfect on the surface. But without God’s guidance, even the best-looking ideas can lead you off course.
Just think about Sarai’s suggestion to Abram, it wasn’t out of left field. It aligned with the cultural norms of the time. Using a surrogate to have an heir was common and even expected. From a human perspective, it made sense. But just because it was a good idea didn’t mean it was a God idea. Following through on that plan caused strife, delayed God’s promise, and brought unintended consequences.
The same principle applies to your life. A new job offer might seem like a great move, but it could take you away from what God is preparing for you. A relationship might feel right in the moment, but without alignment with God’s will, it could lead to heartbreak. Even noble goals like buying a house, starting a business, or pursuing a dream should be weighed carefully against God’s timing and direction.
The psalmist reminds us that the key to a blessed life is delighting in God’s Word and seeking His counsel above all else. Like a child who says, “Uh uh, Daddy said no,” you need to make God’s voice the ultimate authority in your decisions. When you rely on His wisdom, you’ll avoid the pitfalls of well-meaning but misguided advice.
When you move without consulting God, you risk consequences that could have been avoided. Abram and Sarai’s decision didn’t just create tension between them, it delayed the fulfillment of God’s promise. The same is true for you. Acting outside of God’s will can lead to frustration, disappointment, and unnecessary delays in experiencing His best.
Before you make a decision, take it to God. Pray, meditate on His Word, and seek His guidance. A good idea may tempt you to act quickly, but a God idea will bring peace, purpose, and prosperity. Trust His plan, His pace, and His process—He alone knows what’s best for you. Don’t swing at bad pitches or follow bad advice, even when it comes from good people. Make God’s Word your priority and your guide.
