Ask for More Than Money
“And stopping, Jesus called them and said, ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ They said to him, ‘Lord, let our eyes be opened.’” – Matthew 20:32-33
As we have looked at the last couple of days, there is a story in Matthew 20 where Jesus and His disciples are headed to Jerusalem when they pass by two blind men sitting beside the road. In that time, blind beggars were often ignored by society, pushed to the edges of the crowd, seen but not heard. Most days, their routine was simple. Ask for money. Hope someone would give. Survive another day.
But something different happened on this day. When these two men heard that Jesus was coming by, they cried out, not for coins but for mercy. That’s worth slowing down to consider. Mercy meant they weren’t just asking for a handout. They were asking for a transformation. And once Jesus stopped, they didn't' ask for money, but for their sight.
That decision changed everything. They could have stuck with what they always asked for. They could have asked for what seemed normal or expected. But they didn’t. They reached a point where they wanted something deeper, something more lasting than a few dollars in their hands. They wanted to be whole. They wanted to see.
Sometimes the reason we stay stuck is because we keep asking God for things that cannot change us. A bigger paycheck. A relationship. A new house. These things might bring comfort, but they won’t bring clarity. They won’t heal what’s broken inside.
Maybe that’s why you feel like God hasn’t stopped by your situation yet. Maybe He’s waiting on you to want something deeper. Maybe He’s listening for a cry that comes not from surface desires, but from a deeper hunger for change.
The blind men didn’t ask to get by. They asked to be transformed. And Jesus stopped when He heard that kind of prayer.
Let me ask you, what are you asking for today? Is it something that will put you right back in the same place tomorrow? Or is it something that could truly change your life? The Lord is near. He hears your cry. The question is, what are you really asking for?
