Health vs. Healing
“For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord.” - Jeremiah 30:17
When you think about your health, it's easy to focus on moments of crisis, the times you feel broken, the wounds that need healing. God promises restoration and healing, but there's a subtle yet important distinction between health and healing. Healing is for what has already been broken, while health is about sustaining and maintaining what’s whole before it breaks down. Both are necessary, but we must not overlook one in favor of the other.
Too often, in our prayers, we ask God to heal us without considering the steps we can take to maintain good health in the first place. It's tempting to treat God’s healing as a quick fix rather than adopting a lifestyle that prioritizes wellness. What you need to understand is that healing is reactive. Health is proactive. God’s restoration is powerful, but He’s also called us to be good stewards of our bodies and to live in a way that prevents harm.
God’s promises of healing are not meant to be an excuse for neglecting the practices that keep us healthy. Just like the woman caught in adultery whom Jesus forgave, He instructed her to stop living the way she had. He didn’t just free her spiritually, He called her to a transformed life. Similarly, when we pray for health or healing, we must also take action. Our faith must be active, not passive. As James says, “Faith without works is dead.”
The takeaway today is this: Don’t wait for a crisis to cry out for healing. Be proactive in maintaining your health: mind, body, and soul. God will restore what is broken, but He also gives you the wisdom to prevent breakage in the first place. Health is not just waiting for God to heal you; it’s working with Him to maintain the life He’s given you.
