Knowing When to Pivot
"Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." - Isaiah 43:19
Life doesn’t move in a straight line. There are moments when you realize that where you are isn’t where you’re meant to stay. Those moments call for a pivot—a shift in direction, focus, or mindset that allows you to step into something greater.
Think about the story of Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. They started with Burbn, an app that wasn’t gaining traction. It could have been a failed venture, but instead of giving up, they paid attention to what was working and what wasn’t. They pivoted their focus to photo sharing, and the result was Instagram, one of the most successful platforms in the world.
You might not be creating a tech startup, but the principle still applies. Maybe you’re in a season where things aren’t working the way you expected. A job, relationship, or dream you’ve been pursuing feels stagnant or unfulfilling. It doesn’t mean you’ve failed, it means it’s time to evaluate where you are and listen for God’s direction on where you need to go next.
God often calls us to pivot because He’s preparing us for something new. Staying stuck in a place that isn’t working, whether it’s out of fear, pride, or comfort can keep you from experiencing the fullness of His plans for your life. Pivoting doesn’t mean abandoning your purpose; it means adjusting your approach to align with His will.
The key to knowing when and how to pivot is staying connected to God. Pray for His guidance, seek wisdom in His Word, and be open to His leading, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone. Trust that He sees the bigger picture and knows what’s best for you.
When you embrace change and trust His plan, you’ll find that He’s always doing a new thing—making ways in the wilderness and creating streams in the desert. Don’t be afraid to pivot when He calls you to. It could be the shift that takes you higher, makes you better, and leads you farther than you ever imagined. Keep moving forward, trusting that God is guiding you every step of the way.
