God Cares About Your Body
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
It’s easy to think that spiritual practices like singing, shouting, preaching, and reading the Bible define a spiritual life. While those things are essential, they are not the full picture. If you’re mistreating your body or using prayer as a way to avoid responsibility for your health, you’re missing a vital part of God’s plan. Caring for your body is a central aspect of God’s redemptive work in your life.
John’s words to Gaius remind us of the deep connection between physical health and spiritual well-being. He prayed that Gaius would be in good health just as his soul prospered, recognizing the symbiotic relationship between the body, mind, and spirit. When your body isn’t cared for, it can hinder your ability to experience peace, receive spiritual revelation, and engage in the work God has called you to do.
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians emphasize that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, a sacred space that belongs to God. When you treat your body with care, you are honoring God. This isn’t just about avoiding harmful behaviors but actively embracing a lifestyle that promotes health and flourishing.
We often compartmentalize spirituality, forgetting that God’s desire for your well-being includes your physical body. The word “prosper” in John’s prayer points to human flourishing—thriving in every aspect of life, including your health. To truly glorify God, you must adopt a holistic theology that includes the body. This requires rediscovering what God’s Word says about health and making choices that align with His design.
Are you honoring God with the temple He’s entrusted to you? Remember, your physical health isn’t separate from your spiritual journey. It’s a vital part of living out God’s purpose for your life.
