Something Better
"And Jesus in pity touched their eyes, and immediately they recovered their sight and followed him" – Matthew 20:34
There are times in life when we think we know exactly what we need. We come to God with a list of requests, convinced that if He would just grant those things, our lives would be better. We ask for the job, the promotion, the house, the relationship, the opportunity. And sometimes, like the two blind men sitting beside the road in Matthew 20, we even ask for something that seems completely good and reasonable.
They asked Jesus to restore their physical sight. That’s what they thought they needed most. But here’s the part that gets missed unless you dig a little deeper. In verse 33, the word used for “eyes” refers to their physical vision. But in verse 34, when Jesus touches them, the word for “eyes” is different. That second word speaks to insight. Spiritual understanding. In other words, Jesus didn’t just open their physical eyes. He opened something deeper within them.
This shows us something powerful. What they wanted was good, but what Jesus gave them was better. He knew they needed more than the ability to see the world around them. They needed the ability to see the truth about themselves, about Him, and about what really mattered.
Have you ever gotten what you asked for and later realized it wasn’t what you needed at all? Maybe it was the promotion that came with pressure you weren’t ready for. The relationship that looked promising but turned out to be draining. The opportunity that brought more stress than joy. You thought it would fulfill you, but it only left you empty.
But Jesus knows the difference between your wants and your needs. And while He has the power to give you what you want, He loves you enough to give you what you need. Something lasting. Something deeper. Something better.
Sometimes, the greatest blessing is not getting what you asked for, but receiving what God knows will actually grow you. Because when He opens your eyes, you don’t just see your surroundings more clearly. You see Him. And that’s the kind of vision that changes everything.
