Faith in the Midst of Disappointment
"I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord!’" - Psalm 122:1
Disappointment can shake your faith like nothing else. When people fail you, especially those who claim to represent God, it can make you question everything. You have seen corruption, hypocrisy, and brokenness, not just in the world but in places that were supposed to be safe. Maybe you have even experienced it firsthand. It is easy to wonder, “What is the point of trusting in something that has let me down before?”
The people of Israel wrestled with the same questions. When the Babylonians destroyed the temple, their entire world fell apart. The very place that represented God’s presence was gone, and with it, their sense of security. Religious leaders turned corrupt, sided with the enemy, or simply gave up. People lost trust in the system and in each other. They wondered if faith was still worth it.
Maybe you have been there. Maybe you have seen too much or been hurt too deeply. It is tempting to shut down and build walls, to decide that faith is just another thing that disappoints. But that is not the full story. The Psalmist declared that the gates of hell will not prevail, not that they will not attack. The truth is that people will fail, institutions will fall short, and leaders will disappoint. But God remains the same.
Faith was never meant to be in people. It was meant to be in Him. People change, but His love does not. Leaders fail, but His power does not. Institutions may crumble, but His promises remain.
So what do you do when your trust has been broken? You do not give up on God because of people. You do not let disappointment rob you of the relationship that strengthens and sustains you. You go back to the One who has never failed you. You lean into His truth, His presence, and His unshakable faithfulness.
Disappointment will come, but it does not have to define your faith. Trust in God, even when others have let you down. He is still working, still moving, and still worthy of your trust.
