Who God Invites to the Table
"Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand." - Romans 14:4
When we envision God’s table, it’s easy to picture it filled with people who seem “worthy” by our standards. Those who appear righteous, kind, or godly. But God’s table isn’t limited by human expectations. His invitation extends to everyone, regardless of their past, their mistakes, or how others view them.
It can be tempting to look at someone’s history and question why God would use them or include them in His kingdom. Maybe you’ve been hurt by someone, or their reputation makes it hard for you to see how they could ever belong. But the truth is that none of us have earned a place at God’s table. Every single one of us comes with baggage, sin, and brokenness. The only reason we are invited is because of God’s grace, and that same grace is available to everyone.
Think about the Apostle Paul. Before his encounter with Jesus, he was known for persecuting Christians. By human standards, Paul wouldn’t seem like someone fit for God’s work. Yet, God chose him, transformed his life, and used him to spread the gospel to countless people. Paul’s story reminds us that God’s grace is bigger than our judgments. He sees potential where we see failure. He brings redemption where we see only ruin.
God’s heart is for all people to come to know Him. He desires for everyone to have a personal relationship with Him, and He can use even the most unlikely individuals to fulfill His purposes. It’s not our role to decide who belongs at the table. That is God’s decision alone. Instead of judging others, we are called to celebrate God’s ability to redeem, restore, and transform lives.
The next time you’re tempted to question someone’s place at God’s table, remember that you, too, are there only because of His mercy. Let that truth humble you and lead you to extend grace to others. Celebrate the God who invites everyone and transforms anyone willing to accept His invitation.
