Bury the Past to Claim the Future
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come." - 2 Corinthians 5:17
In 2 Kings 18, Hezekiah, a character we have looked at the last couple of days, could not step into his God-given role as king until something significant happened (just 2 chapters prior). His father, Ahaz, had to be buried. Hezekiah’s reign began only after he buried not just his father but the weight of the trauma and dysfunction his father had left behind. This wasn’t just a physical burial, it was symbolic of letting go of the pain and brokenness of his past to step into the future God had prepared for him.
The same is true for you. You can’t fully embrace what God has for your future if you’re still holding on to the wounds of your past. Maybe it’s something someone did to you, something you lost, or even mistakes you’ve made yourself. If you’re not careful, those things can become chains that keep you from moving forward.
A scene from the movie, The Wisdom of Trauma, paints this reality vividly. An inmate shared how the pain of losing his father as a child shaped his entire life. He carried that wound into adulthood, and it influenced his decisions, leading to his imprisonment. While he was physically behind bars, his real prison was the unresolved pain in his heart.
You might not be physically locked up, but unresolved trauma can imprison your spirit. It can keep you stuck in patterns of bitterness, fear, or despair. But God doesn’t want you to stay there. He has more for you. Hezekiah shows us that healing comes when you make the choice to bury the past, not to deny it happened, but to take its power away.
This isn’t easy. Burying the past means confronting the pain, surrendering it to God, and trusting Him to bring healing. But when you do, you’ll find freedom and a renewed ability to walk into the future He’s planned for you. Your past doesn’t have the final say, God does.
Don’t let yesterday’s pain rob you of tomorrow’s promise. It’s time to bury what’s behind you and step into the incredible future God has waiting for you.
