Plenty of Room
"Go therefore to the main roads and invite to the wedding feast as many as you find." - Matthew 22:9
A while back, there was an interesting discussion on a television show featuring Gayle King and Charles Barkley. Gayle shared a story about being invited to dinner by Charles, an invitation she eagerly accepted. She prepared thoroughly, choosing the perfect outfit, doing her makeup, and even researching the restaurant. Gayle looked forward to an intimate evening of conversation and laughter with her friend.
But when she arrived, she discovered that Charles had invited ten other people to join them. The cozy dinner she’d envisioned became a group gathering. Gayle was caught off guard, and during the show, they debated the etiquette of inviting others to what she thought was an exclusive dinner.
As they talked, Charles interrupted the discussion and firmly stated, “I’m the one who planned the dinner. I extended the invitation to all the guests. I’m the one paying for the meal. Because I’m the host, I get to invite whoever I want.” His words settled the debate, and while brash, they offered an important truth that mirrors God’s plan of salvation.
In Matthew 22, Jesus tells a parable of a king who prepared a wedding feast for his son. Initially, the king invited a select group, but they refused to come. So, he extended the invitation to anyone willing to accept. The king sent his servants to the streets, inviting everyone they could find, regardless of status or background. The focus shifted from exclusivity to inclusion, emphasizing the King’s authority to decide who dines at His table.
God’s kingdom works the same way. None of us deserves an invitation to His table, but through Jesus, the price has been paid, and the invitation is open to all. It’s not up to us to decide who belongs; it’s up to God.
This should humble and inspire you. Instead of judging who deserves a seat, celebrate the abundant grace of the Host. Accept your place with gratitude and share the invitation with others. God’s banquet has room for everyone who says yes to Him.
