The Purpose of the Valley
"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." - Psalm 23:1-4
We all love the mountaintop moments in life. The seasons when everything is going right, prayers are being answered, and life feels full of joy. But what about the valleys? The times of confusion, disappointment, and struggle? If you only accept the peaks and reject the valleys, you will always feel frustrated. Because the truth is, one cannot exist without the other.
If you stand on a high mountain, look closely. There is always a deep valley below. They are not separate forces. They are part of the same landscape. The same is true in your life. The greater the joy, the more you will understand sorrow. The more you experience peace, the more aware you become of what chaos feels like. You cannot have one without the other.
That does not mean you should fear the valleys. It means you should trust that God is working in both. He is the God of the mountaintop, but He is also the God of the valley. When you walk through difficulties, He does not abandon you. He leads you, restores you, and strengthens you. If you only embrace Him when things are good, you will miss out on what He wants to teach you in the hard moments.
Sometimes, the valley is where you grow the most. It is where your faith is stretched, your trust is deepened, and your dependence on God becomes real. The joy you experience on the mountain is even sweeter when you have walked through the valley to get there.
Where are you right now? Are you standing on a peak, enjoying the view? Or are you in a valley, wondering when it will end? No matter where you are, God is with you. Do not reject the valleys. Do not fear them. Trust that God has a purpose in every season. He is leading you through, and on the other side, you will find that the journey was worth it.
