Shift Your Weight
"Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices." - Psalm 37:7
In high school, I learned an important lesson about patience at the plate. During a hitting slump, my father, who was also my coach, told me that my problem wasn’t my ability, it was my stance. I kept putting my weight on my front foot, leaning in too early, and swinging at bad pitches. His advice was simple: shift your weight to your back foot. That small adjustment gave me the patience to wait for the right pitch and make better contact.
The same principle applies to your spiritual life. Sometimes, the reason you’re swinging at bad pitches; making decisions that don’t align with God’s will, is that you’re leaning forward, trying to force things to happen. You’re putting all your weight on the “what ifs” and “whens,” instead of staying grounded in the present and trusting God’s timing.
But what if, instead of leaning into your anxiety, you shifted your weight to your back foot? What if you chose to rest in God’s promises and gave yourself the space to discern His direction before moving forward? Waiting doesn’t mean doing nothing, it means being still enough to see clearly and act wisely when the right opportunity comes.
Desperation causes you to lean forward too soon. It convinces you to force a relationship even when the red flags are clear. It tempts you to chase quick fixes that promise prosperity but leave you worse off. It drives you to ignore wisdom in pursuit of a shortcut. These are all bad pitches, and when you swing at them, you risk more than just striking out, you risk stepping outside of God’s will.
Shifting your weight spiritually means slowing down, being patient, and letting God lead. It means trusting Him even when things don’t seem to be moving as quickly as you’d like. It’s better to wait on the Lord and be at peace than to rush ahead and live in regret.
God’s promises come with His timing, and when you rest in Him, you’ll find that the right opportunities, the ones worth swinging at, will come. Wait on the Lord, and He will strengthen your heart. Shift your weight, stay patient, and trust Him to guide your steps.
