The Trap of More
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” – Hebrews 13:5
We live in a world that’s always pushing us to pursue “more.” More success, more money, more followers, more possessions. This endless drive can leave us feeling empty, even when we’re surrounded by things. It’s like being on a treadmill that never stops, or a hamster running on a wheel, always moving but never getting anywhere. We chase the next achievement or experience, hoping it will finally bring satisfaction, but it remains just out of reach.
In this constant striving, it’s easy to forget that we are human beings, not human doings. We were created to live fully in the moment, to connect with God and ourselves, not to be endlessly driven by ambition and comparison. When our focus shifts to pursuing more, we can lose touch with what it means to simply “be,” to enjoy where we are and who we are in the presence of God.
Contentment is the art of being satisfied with where you are and what you have. It doesn’t mean giving up on dreams or goals but learning to find peace in the present. As Arthur Schlesinger once noted, our society is marked by an “inextinguishable discontent,” constantly pushing for what’s next. We convince ourselves that satisfaction will come with the next purchase, the next promotion, or the next experience, yet it always remains just out of reach.
This trap of “more” can distract us from God’s call to find our security in Him, not in possessions or achievements. True contentment grows when we recognize that God is enough, that He is with us, and that He provides everything we need.
Instead of chasing after what’s beyond, we can thank God for what’s right in front of us. So today, take a moment to pause, breathe, and consider the blessings you already have. Let contentment and gratitude fill your heart, knowing that God’s presence and promises are more than enough.
