The Courage to Leave and the Humility to Be Led
"Saying, 'Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.' - Matthew 2:2
The wise men teach us an invaluable lesson, not just in what they left behind, but in how they were led to something greater. They didn’t know exactly where Jesus was; they simply followed the star, trusting that it would guide them.
This journey wasn’t just about stepping away from a familiar place; it was about submitting to the process of being led. They knew that in order to reach their destination, they had to trust in something greater than their own wisdom.
The wise men’s decision to leave the East was not necessarily because it was a bad place, but because it was not the place where they would find Jesus. This is important for us to recognize in our own lives.
Sometimes, we are called to leave behind not what’s wrong, but what’s simply not conducive to our next level. It might be a job, a relationship, or even a mindset that has served its purpose, but it’s time to move forward. Just like Peter had to step out of the boat in order to get closer to Jesus, the wise men had to step away from their comfortable knowledge and security to embark on a journey into the unknown.
God often calls us to uncharted territories, places that challenge us to grow. As Pema Chodron writes, “To be fully alive, fully human, and completely awake is to be continually thrown out of the nest.” It’s not about stepping out of a bad place, but about stepping into God’s greater purpose for us. What is it that you need to walk away from in order to experience something new in God? What is He calling you to leave behind so that you can move forward?

I'm definitely being called to walk away from something to allow someone good into my life. Thank you so much for this devotional.
