Put Your Trust in What You Know
"Be sober-minded; be watchful." - 1 Peter 5:8
Your mind is powerful, processing countless thoughts every minute, and without realizing it, your mind can lead you into a maze of anxious thoughts. Neuroscientists tell us that the human brain can process information at incredible speeds, up to 268 miles per hour.
That’s why it’s easy to get swept away by “what ifs,” especially when life feels uncertain or out of control. Peter’s advice in his letter is clear: be alert and of sober mind. In other words, set some boundaries for your thoughts.
The mind, left unchecked, tends to spiral into worst-case scenarios. You might catch yourself thinking, "What will happen to my family if I lose my job? Will this health issue get worse? What if my marriage doesn’t survive this rough patch?" Those kinds of thoughts stir up anxiety and steal your peace.
Peter understood this well, and that’s why he urges us to be disciplined in how we think. He’s teaching us about “metacognition” or the ability to think about our thoughts and set limits on where our mind goes.
Instead of speculating about everything that could go wrong, Peter encourages you to focus on what you know. Trust in what is certain: God’s love, His power, and His care for you.
Charles Swindoll once said, "Worry pulls tomorrow’s clouds over today’s sunshine." When you let anxiety take over, you’re robbing yourself of the peace and joy God intends for you today. The more you dwell on unknowns, the more you become stuck in a cycle of worry.
Peter’s call to be sober-minded is a reminder to ground yourself in what is clear and real. Focus on what God has promised, not what you fear might happen. When you let your thoughts stay centered on the truth of who God is and how He’s carried you through before, you’ll find your spirit calm and your decisions clearer.
