Embracing Your Struggle with Faith
“Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them, for they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.” - Luke 21:3-4
The last couple of days, we have looked at a passage in scripture that depicts wealthy individuals parading their substantial donations in the synagogue, their gifts clinking and clattering in the offering plate, drawing attention and admiration, while a poor widow, dressed modestly and offering just two small copper coins that barely make a sound. Her presence, amidst the showy displays of wealth, could have easily been overshadowed.
Yet, this woman, despite her financial struggle, did not let shame or her circumstances keep her away from worship. In a society that marginalized her due to her poverty, widowhood, and gender, she made the bold decision to be present. Her act of giving was not about impressing others but about honoring God from the depths of her heart.
Her offering was small in the eyes of many, but it was monumental in God’s sight. She understood that her self-worth was not tied to her net worth. Her decision to give what she had, despite her struggles, reflected a deep trust in God’s provision and a commitment that transcended societal judgments.
In today’s world, it’s easy to feel excluded or ashamed because of personal struggles or financial status. We may feel pressured to conform to certain standards or to withhold our contributions, fearing judgment or feeling inadequate. But the widow's story reminds us that God values our heart and our determination more than our material wealth.
Don’t let societal pressures or personal struggles keep you from engaging with your faith or contributing to the Kingdom. Whether you're dealing with financial difficulties, personal loss, or social stigma, remember that your presence and your heart are what matter most to God. Just as Jesus noticed and valued the widow's humble offering, He sees and appreciates your faithfulness, no matter how small it may seem to others.
Your struggle doesn’t disqualify you from participating in worship or giving. In fact, your perseverance and willingness to contribute despite your challenges is a powerful testament to God’s grace and strength in your life. Keep showing up, keep giving from your heart, and trust that God sees and honors your faithfulness.
