I Can’t Hear You
"I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd." - John 10:16
In a crowded society, amidst the endless number of voices vying for attention, Jesus speaks an important truth to His disciples: He has other sheep who need to hear His voice. Yet, there's a problem He addresses—one that resonates with our modern world.
Picture this: you're sitting in a crowded restaurant, eager to engage in conversation with your companions. But amidst the chatter, the voices at the neighboring table drown out your own, making it difficult to hear and be heard. It's a scenario that mirrors what Jesus describes in the spiritual realm.
Jesus laments that His other sheep, those outside the current fold of believers, struggle to hear His voice because His followers are talking too loud. It's a sobering realization—that our words, well-intentioned as they may be, can inadvertently drown out the message of Christ for those who need it most.
There's a saying that goes, "You can't listen with your mouth open." It's a gentle reminder that sometimes, amidst our fervent expressions of faith, we forget the importance of listening. Listening to God's voice, yes, but also listening to the voices of those around us—especially those who have yet to encounter the love of Christ.
In the spiritual marketplace, filled with diverse beliefs and ideologies, our task as Christians is not only to proclaim the Gospel but also to create space for others to hear it. It requires humility, a willingness to step back from the spotlight, and a commitment to listen—to truly listen—to the hearts and needs of those around us.
So, let's pause for a moment amidst the noise of our busy lives. Let's close our mouths and open our ears, attuning them to the still, small voice of God and to the voices of those longing to hear His message of love and redemption. For in the act of listening, we pave the way for others to encounter the Shepherd whose voice brings hope and salvation to us all.
