Continual Cleansing
"For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified." - John 17:19
Have you ever considered the ongoing nature of sanctification in the life of a believer? Jesus prayed in John 17:19, expressing his desire for us to be sanctified through the truth. Sanctification is not a one-time event but a continual process of bringing every aspect of our lives into conformity with God's will.
Think of salvation as being like birthing: a one-time event that marks the beginning of our journey with Christ. But sanctification is more like bathing – a daily practice of cleansing and renewal. Just as we bathe daily to wash away the dirt and grime of the day, we need continual sanctification to rid ourselves of the pollutants that infiltrate our thoughts, emotions, and flesh.
I recently attended an event where people were smoking cigars. Though I didn't partake, the smell and residue of their activity clung to my clothes and seemed to linger on my skin. If I had gone straight to another gathering, others might have assumed I had been smoking cigars myself. I needed to bathe to rid myself of that lingering odor and residue. Sanctification works similarly, removing the stench and imprint of worldly influences from our minds, emotions, and flesh.
As children of God, we are called not only to effect change in the world but also to undergo continual transformation ourselves. Job understood this principle when he declared, "…and when He has tested me, I shall come forth as pure gold…"
The process of sanctification enhances our witness and demonstrates to the world that we have been changed by the power of Christ. It's through this ongoing transformation that we become more like Him and reflect His glory to those around us.
Begin to embrace the process of sanctification with humility and perseverance, knowing that God is at work within us, shaping us into vessels of honor. As we allow Him to cleanse and renew us daily, we will shine forth as beacons of His love and grace in a world in need of His transformative power.
