Guard Your Words
"With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God's likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be." - James 3:9-10
James reminds us that our tongues can be a double-edged sword. With them, we offer praises to our Lord, yet in the same breath, we may curse fellow human beings. It's a contradiction that calls us to a higher standard of speech.
Why should you avoid speaking death over the lives of others? First and foremost, it goes against the very essence of our faith. Each person is uniquely created in the image of God. When you use your words to degrade, belittle, or gossip about someone, you are tarnishing the reflection of God's likeness in them.
Consider the impact of your words according to Scripture. They hold the power to uplift and inspire, but they can also wound and destroy. Your speech has the potential to build bridges or erect walls, to promote love or sow discord. When you choose to speak life and encouragement, you become a vessel of God's love.
Gossip and rumors are like wildfires; they spread rapidly, causing immeasurable harm. Speaking ill of others tarnishes not only their reputation but also your own. It erodes trust and credibility. Choose instead to be a voice of integrity, one that seeks truth and fairness.
It’s no secret that slander and derogatory remarks are toxic to relationships. They create division and hurt that can linger for years. Instead, choose to be a peacemaker and a source of healing. Strive to understand others and extend grace, just as God has extended grace to you.
Remember that your words have the power to bring life or death into the lives of others. Choose life. Choose words that honor God, uplift people, and promote unity. When you guard your speech against gossip, slander, discrimination, and negativity, you become a vessel of God's love and grace in a world that desperately needs it.
