A Love That Acts
"Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. But be doers of the word and not merely hearers who deceive themselves." - James 1:21-22
In the pursuit of living out God's Word, there is no more vital arena than your interactions with others. James makes it clear that faith should not remain confined to mere words; it must be evident in your deeds, especially in how you treat those you encounter in your daily life.
As you go about your day, think of the people you encounter—colleagues, strangers, family members, and friends. Each of these interactions is an opportunity to reflect the love and grace of Christ. With that in mind, let’s look at five specific things we need to learn to do if we want to love others through our actions.
First, you must rid yourself of sordidness and wickedness. In other words, begin by examining your heart. Rid yourself of any bitterness, judgment, or negativity that can cloud your interactions. Pray for a heart that is pure and free from malice. Let kindness and compassion be your default response.
Second, you must welcome the implanted Word of God. Invite God's Word to be at the center of your interactions. Let the teachings of Christ guide your responses. When faced with a difficult colleague or a challenging family member, pause and remember the words of Jesus about forgiveness and love.
Third, you must be a doer of the Word. It's easy to speak about love, but it's in your actions that your faith becomes tangible. Be quick to listen and slow to anger. Show empathy to those who are hurting. Be generous with your time and resources when someone is in need. Your deeds will speak volumes about your faith.
Fourth, you must practice authenticity. Be genuine in your interactions. Don't wear a mask or put on a facade. Let your faith shine through your authenticity. Share your struggles and victories and be open about your journey with Christ. Authenticity fosters connection and trust.
Finally, you must learn to live out love. Above all, live out the love of Christ. Love your neighbors, love your enemies, and love yourself. Love is the hallmark of a true follower of Christ. It's not always easy, but it's the most powerful way to be a doer of the Word.
Today, I want to encourage you to make a conscious effort to live out God's Word in your interactions. Seek opportunities to be a source of encouragement, healing, and hope to those you meet. Remember that your actions can be a living testimony to the transformative power of faith. Let your love for others be a reflection of God's love for you.
In living out God's Word in your interactions, you not only bless others but also draw closer to the One who implanted His Word in your heart.
