Endurance Through Trials

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” - James 1:2-3 
  
In the early 1950s, the Timex Corporation found itself teetering on the brink of failure. Despite advertising efforts featuring notable figures like Mickey Mantle and Ben Hogan, sales for their durable watches remained disappointingly low. The company was in dire need of a turnaround. In 1956, they embarked on a new strategy, turning to television and hiring John Cameron Swayze, a former NBC news anchor, as their spokesperson.

Timex introduced a series of live, dramatic commercials that showcased their watches enduring what they termed the "torture test." These tests were no ordinary challenges – the watches were subjected to paint mixers, jackhammers, washing machines, and even an 87-foot cliff dive in Acapulco. After each relentless trial, the resilient Timex watch emerged unscathed. Swayze's closing words became legendary: "It takes a licking and keeps on ticking."
