Cast it on Him
“Casting all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:7
I recently read a true story about a young boy by the name of Sam. Sam lived in a group home and was really doing well. He received all the social support and counseling services that he needed to thrive and do well, and he was progressing quite fine in life and in school.
That was, until one day when he got a new teacher, and all of a sudden he started acting out. Everyone around him was puzzled and confused about what caused this seemingly happy, affable, and well-adjusted child to all of a sudden start misbehaving.
Until one day his counselor at the group home met Sam’s father and realized in an instant what the issue was. Sam’s father wore a very strong Old Spice cologne that was the same scent that his new teacher wore.
Sam’s father was physically and verbally abusive to Sam, doing things to him that no father should ever do to a son. It was a history of abusiveness that led child protective services to remove Sam from his father’s home in the first place.
And so, every time Sam walked into the classroom with this new teacher and encountered the aroma of his teacher’s cologne, the same cologne that his abusive father wore, it triggered old fears, painful memories, and terrifying thoughts for Sam – memories that were recorded in his mind, stamped in his psyche, and engraved in his body.
The counselor shared this observation with the teacher, and once the teacher switched the cologne, Sam’s disruptive behavior stopped. Sam was not a bad kid. The issue was that something bad had happened to him, and once those around him stopped asking what was wrong with him and realized what happened to him, they gained the key insight into what it took to turn things around.
Listen, what you are going through is not always a sign of who you are, but it could be a sign of what you’ve gone through. Trauma is serious. But God is the solution. 1 Peter 5:7 says, “Casting all your anxieties on Him because He cares for you.”
Is your behavior a reflection of you or what you’ve gone through? If you are dealing with the pain and trauma of what you have gone through, cast in on Him. He will help you through it.
