It’s All About Attitude
“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Your attitude determines your altitude?” It is a powerful phrase, but it is an important one. Your perspective determines not only how you view the world, but how you respond to it.
Sir Christopher Wren, an English architect, was supervising the construction of a cathedral in London. A journalist thought it would be interesting to interview some of the workers, so he chose three and asked them the following question, "What are you doing?"
The first worker replied, "I'm cutting stone for 10 shillings a day." The second answered, "I'm putting in 10 hours a day on this job." However, the third responded, "I'm helping Sir Christopher Wren construct one of London's greatest cathedrals.” Which one do you think had the best experience?
All three were in the same boat. They all had the same task and were putting in the same hours. However, the third worker gained joy in knowing that his work was bigger than him. Yes, it was important to get paid. Yes, the employees were working long hours. However, the third worker knew that his labor was not in vain because he was helping to construct one of London’s greatest cathedrals.
You may be in the same situation. You may be performing a daunting task that takes many hours or seems like there is not much relief in sight. Even though your situation may not change in the short-term, your attitude about it can change. You have the power to turn a negative mindset into a positive one.
There is always something to be grateful about. That job may be laborsome, but at least you have a job. Those kids may be getting on your nerves, but you are blessed that God gifted you with them. You may have had an unnecessary expense come up on that car, but at least you have transportation.
If you do not see anything around you to be thankful for, at least you woke up this morning. That means you still have purpose. God graced you with tasks that only you can perform. You are worthy. You are valued. You are necessary.
Whenever you feel the need to complain, find something encouraging to shift your perspective. Just remember, it’s all about your attitude!
