The Light
“Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’” - John 8:12
I read a story once about two young girls who decided to take a stroll into a nearby dense forest after school one day. As they walked through the woods, things got dark as the sun began to set. The wind blew, the leaves bristled, and their vision became dim. In time, they realized they were lost and didn’t know how to get out.
After walking around for what seemed like hours, one of the girls caught a flicker. She jumped up and told her friend, “Follow me,” and within a few minutes, they found themselves on a street, back in a familiar community with streets and people all around.
The other girl said, “How did we get here? How did you know where to go when things got so dark?” to which her friend responded, “All I can tell you is I saw a light and decided to just follow the light.”
There are a number of similar stories online about people vanishing or getting lost in dark places, and what enabled them to make their way to safety, or to make it to where they needed to be, was their ability to find a glimmer of light in the midst of darkness. And even though they didn’t know where it came from or where it was taking them, they arrived at their destination just by following the light.
If you are a believer, you can probably make the instant connection to your own life. Jesus is our light. He even says so in John 8:12, “Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, ‘I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.’”
This world can be dark. But when you have Jesus, you have all the light you need. He isn’t just a glimmer. He can light up everything for us and show us exactly where to walk. Aren’t you thankful for the light Jesus is in our lives? Oh, where would we be without Him...
