Coming For You!
“The day will come, says the Lord, when I will do for Israel and Judah all the good things I have promised them.” - Jeremiah 33:14
Yesterday, we learned that God is the ultimate calvary. When we are in trouble, He is there for us. As Psalm 46:1 tells us, “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.”
This is where Jeremiah finds himself in Jeremiah 33. Here, Jeremiah and his people find themselves in a world that is near the brink of utter ruin and near collapse. The armies of King Nebuchadnezzar are advancing on Jerusalem, and the city streets are soon to be lined with dead people who once walked upon them.
From all accounts, the situation is bleak; the city is doomed. Jeremiah himself is in prison for preaching against the king and his government, and the people of Jerusalem are suffering at the hands of their Babylonian oppressors. It is a dire situation, and the proverbial die has been cast!
And yet, amidst all the devastation, the preacher utters a word of encouragement and promise to these anguished people. With their backs up against the wall and their enemies on the attack, the prophet proclaims that restoration is going to return to this devastated community, and the life they once had will return once again.
His words are vivid and clear. With Nebuchadnezzar and Babylonian armies advancing and, on the attack, with their prospects for survival dim, and the prophet himself in a prison cell, he announces that help is on the way.
They are hurting and they are down. They’ve been badly beaten and bruised, but God through the prophet declares essentially that the calvary is coming, that help is coming, that the hand of God is coming!
Do you feel like the people Jeremiah was speaking to? Remember, Scripture was recorded not just for its significance in that time, but for you and I now! You might be down, but you are not out. God is telling you today that the calvary is coming! Help is coming! The hand of God is coming, and it’s coming for you!
