Get God For Yourself
“And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” - Hebrews 11:6
Over the last week, we have talked about letting go. The reality is if you want to reach your full potential and pursue God’s will, you have to let go of whatever it is that is holding you back. If you have read any of the devotions from the past week, you know this.
But you might be asking, “Pastor, how do I do it? How do I let go and move forward without looking back?” I believe the passage in Genesis 19 implies that cultivating your relationship with God is key. If you are going to successfully remove yourself from the things that are holding you back and embrace the things that God has up ahead, then God has to be in it.
What stands out to me in this text is that in this entire episode of Lot’s life and that of his family, they never seem to do any of the essential things that his uncle Abraham did throughout his faith journey with God. At every juncture for the last 7 chapters or so, whenever Abraham would move and whenever Abraham encountered a challenge or was confronted with an obstacle, he would construct an alter or consult the Lord.
But Lot seems oblivious to the need to prioritize God, honor God, and worship God. Nowhere in the Genesis narrative do we ever see or hear of Lot doing anything to demonstrate his commitment to worship, or even leading his family in worship. His behavior suggests that he is trying to ride the spiritual coattails of his uncle rather than nurturing his relationship with God for himself.
His relationship with God is derivative rather than organic. At a certain point, my friend, you have to get God for yourself. Hebrews 11:6 says, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.”
If you want to let go, move on, and never look back, you need the presence of God. You need the voice of God, and you need the power of God.
