Surrounded By God’s Power
“The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil.” - Psalm 125:3
The fourth and final assurance we have when we are going through difficult circumstances is that we are surrounded by God’s power. The entire chapter of Psalm 125 is a testimony to God’s power. But listen closely to the words of the third verse: “The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil.”
The reference to the scepter is a reference to the power of the kings. In the story of Esther, she could not go before king Xerses until he extended his scepter toward her. The scepter stood for power. The psalmist here says that the scepter—the symbol of power—of the wicked is impotent in the face of the power of God.
“The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous.” The reality of wickedness will not remain on the righteous. Evil, pain, and suffering will come, but they will not rest upon the righteous. It does not mean problems won’t come; they are just temporary.
The witness of our faith is that God’s power has broken the power of evil, defeated the power of sin, and loosed the power of bondage. And when we are facing trials and tribulations, God’s power is our protection. I want you to know that God surrounds you in power.
1 Peter 1:5 tells us, “who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” We are kept by God’s power. The psalmist discovered what you can discover today, that even when you are surrounded by hostile forces, you can look to the power of God for protection. It may look like you are surrounded, but that is because you are surrounded by the Lord!
