Do I Have To Have It All Together?
“Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:7
In July 2021, gymnast Symone Biles announced that she was withdrawing from the Olympic finals. She reached full capacity and couldn’t handle the amount of pressure she was feeling. That high-stress and anxiety led her to conclude that for her own well-being, the well-being of the team, and the Olympic ambitions of the country, she needed to pause and take a time out. It was time for her to focus on her mental health.
She is one of many high-profile athletes and entertainers who have decided to take a break, to stop, or to retire, not because there was anything wrong with their bodies, but because they felt there was something going on in their mind. While many people criticized Simone and those like her for being selfish, these are bold and courageous decisions that reflect the very real crisis that people are facing around the country and even around the world.
And the truth is that those of us who believe in Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior are not immune to the pressures of life, weighing on our minds and spirits. Perhaps you have gone through phases of life that have caused you to be mentally and emotionally ill. Maybe you are going through a time like that right now.
But the good news is that you don’t have to have it all together. You have direct access to a God, ready and willing to relieve that fear. God does not want you to fear anything because He is in control and has already created a way out. Nothing happens without His permission.
The next time you feel emotions like fear, anxiety, or depression, remember who is in control of all things. Call on His name and ask Him to help you. Praise Him in advance for your healing that is on the way. He is waiting for you to come to Him for rest.
