God’s Blessing Of Redemption
“While we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are his very own, eager to do what is good.” - Titus 2:13-14
When it comes to remembering the blessings God has given us, we must go beyond the physical and material gifts that are within our realm of possession. Over the next five days, we will look at five blessings that are essential to understanding who we are and whose we are. These blessings are extended to us because we are a part of God’s family.
We’ve got the power working with us because our Heavenly Father has equipped us with purpose by bestowing rights and privileges to those of us whom He has welcomed into His family. The first blessing we have from God is that of redemption. Ephesians 1:7 says, “In him,” that is in Christ, “we have been redeemed through his blood.”
In other words when Jesus died on Calvary’s cross, when He shed his blood, He was atoning or paying the price for our sins. His death was a substitutionary act wherein His blood settled a debt for sin that we owed. See, under the old covenant, whenever a person or a nation sinned against God, the shedding of blood was required to make amends for the sin that was committed. In the temple, blood from an unblemished animal sacrifice was ceremonially and sacrificially poured on the “mercy seat” or on the altar to pay the price for the sin of the nation.
But in the New Covenant, the debt for sin was so great, that only the blood of the Lamb of God could settle the debt of sin that we owed. We must ground our understanding of spiritual freedom upon the affirmation that we are in right standing with God not because of anything we have done, but because of what Jesus did on Calvary. Jesus became the sacrificial Lamb who took away the sins of the world.
God is a God of blessings. But there is no greater blessing than the redemption we have because of what Jesus did on the Cross! And because of this, we can spend eternity in heaven. Thank God today, and every day, for this blessing. For there is no greater blessing!
