A LOT To Lose
“When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus. He recovered all the goods and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.”
- Genesis 14:14-16
Abram, in the midst of journeying towards the place of promise that God had for him, someone dear to him was taken. Lot, a member of Abram’s family, was in a crisis, and his life and the lives of his family were at stake. The narrative details how Abram responds when he loses Lot.
I’m sure he wonders and struggles with what to do now that Lot had been taken from him. Does he give up and walk away from the military power that is far greater than himself? Or does he try to do something about it? Anyone who reads this story can identify with Abram. At some point or another, maybe even right at this moment, you have a “Lot” in your own life that you have lost or are on the verge of losing.
Perhaps not “Lot” your nephew, but you have a lot of peace that you have lost, a lot of money that’s been taken, or a lot of happiness that you no longer have. The marriage you thought was fail proof is about to end. The job you thought you would always have sends you a pink slip. The addiction you had has reemerged and is threatening the well-being of your children, your own health, and all of your relationships. You have a LOT to lose.
Yet, here you are, on the verge of losing a “lot” and you ask yourself, “what do I do now?” Abram teaches us that our moral obligation, our divine duty is to intervene and do something when we have lost a lot. He encourages us with his example to not resign yourself to giving up and throwing in the towel. And to do that we must first of all determine that what we lost is worth fighting for.
Maybe God is testing you. He may be removing something in your life right now. But that does not mean He wants you to give up. So keep fighting. Do not be the victim that loses A LOT.
