Find The Win-Win
“So Abram said to Lot, ‘Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me, or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives. Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.’” – Genesis 13:8-9
In professional sports, there is a point a little past the midway mark of the season in which a trade deadline occurs. This is the last possible day in which teams can trade players. Typically, there are a lot of trades announced right before the deadline, as teams are trying to upgrade their roster just in time for a playoff run, in hopes of winning a championship.
The teams’ general managers are the ones responsible for officially making trades. Some GMs are known for slick trades and ripping off other teams. These GMs often get a bad reputation, making other GMs afraid to do deals with them. The best general managers find a way to make the trade a win-win for both teams.
When you are in an argument, altercation, or conflict, you should try to resolve the issue the same way as these reputable GMs, through a win-win situation. If you can find a way that both sides win, the issue will be more easily resolved because everyone will be content with the outcome.
When Abram was talking to Lot, he took the high road and presented a solution that could benefit everyone. He told Lot they did not have to fight, but instead that he could choose whichever way he wanted to go, and that Abram would take the other side. So often it is believed that only one side can win in a conflict, but that just isn’t true.
The next time you find yourself in an argument or disagreement, do not seek to only find what would be a “win” for you or your crew. Instead find a solution that is a win-win for everyone. This will resolve conflict much easier and develop trust in those around you. It is simple, and it’s just better for everyone when you all win!
