Come To Jesus
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29)
Yesterday we talked about recognizing the signs of burnout, the signs that you’re running on empty. Several people in the Bible show us how important it is to recognize those signs: David, Jeremiah, and even Jesus Himself. But we can’t just stop at recognizing the signs. There’s more to it than that; but thankfully, Jesus guides us in that journey to finding rest every step of the way.
He says, once you recognize that you are showing signs of burnout, once you detect that something is off, once you find yourself running on an empty tank, here’s what I want you to do, “come to me.”
That’s important because oftentimes when we are overwhelmed, when we are weighed down, we turn inward and tell ourselves we can handle it. We tell ourselves we just need to work harder, that we need to put in a few extra hours. We tell ourselves we can do this if we just dig deeper. But Jesus says when we are physically, mentally, and spiritually worn out, we don’t have to handle it ourselves, we can come to him. He tells us that the solution for an overloaded soul is not a plan, process, or potion, but a person. And that person is Jesus.
Coming to Jesus is the Lord’s answer to an underlying myth that fuels burnout—the myth that “I can handle it all myself.” We think we’ve got everything under control and that we’re fully capable of handling every aspect of our lives with excellence if we just work hard enough. But nothing could be further from the truth. We can’t do anything without Jesus, and that includes finding rest and rejuvenation to overcome burnout.
Have you sat at the feet of Jesus lately? Have you cut out all distractions, demands, and deadlines so that you can spend time with your Savior through praise, prayer, and fellowship? If not, take some time today, even if it’s just a few minutes, and accept Jesus’ invitation to, “come to me.” Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
