The Seal Of Ownership
In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit. (Ephesians 1:13)
As we’ve discussed the past couple of days, the seal of the Holy Spirit signifies authenticity and it signifies authority. But there’s one final thing the Holy Spirit’s seal signifies, and that is ownership.
The seal of an ancient ruler declared absolute ownership. For example, when King Zedekiah imprisoned Jeremiah in Jeremiah 32, Jeremiah was commanded by the Lord to purchase a piece of property. The transaction was agreed upon. The price was paid and the required number of witnesses watched as Jeremiah became the rightful owner of the property. The seal marked the property as his. It belonged to him.
The Holy Spirit marks us as the Lord’s personal possession in the same way. The Holy Spirit declares that we are God’s property. And if we are God’s property, there can be no trespassing on God’s property. When God saved us, He sealed us to declare to the world and the devil that we’ve been authenticated, that we have authority, and that we no longer belong to ourselves, we belong to God.
Therefore, our thoughts and our actions must reflect that of holiness and righteousness. As a reflection of God, we are often the only example many will see and understand of God.
You were bought with a price and just know that what God owns, He takes care of.
