The Gift Of The Holy Spirit
In him you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and had believed in him, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God’s own people, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
Yesterday we talked about the power of the Holy Spirit living within us, how that power is made available to us every single day. But you might be wondering, “Why do I have this power? What is it that enabled or qualified me to get this power?”
If you look at Ephesians 1:1-6, you can see that we have this power as a result of three blessings given to us from God the Father. In verses 7-12, we learn that we have this power as a result of five blessings given to us by God the Son. And in our text today, verses 13 and 14, we learn that we have this power because of three blessings given to us by God the Holy Spirit.
We have this power working within us because we have been blessed WITH and blessed BY the person and presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives. Look once again to the Word of the Lord: “When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”
In this passage, Paul indicates that when we received Christ, included with that decision comes a series of remarkable advantages and privileges that are given to those of us who name the Name of Jesus Christ. And knowing what the Holy Spirit has done and does for us as Christians is important. The Holy Spirit is a unique gift that we get to experience because we are living in the time period after Jesus’ ascension. Before Jesus ascended, His presence was limited to His physical presence on earth. But once He left, He sent the Holy Spirit to guide us, help us, encourage us, and lead us.
So with that in mind, let’s embrace the power Paul was talking about as we lean into the guidance, the help, the encouragement, and the leadership that comes from the Holy Spirit. Once we do that, we can move toward all that God has in store for us according to His greater plan and purpose.
