Wholeness Is A Choice
You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. – James 2:22-24
In his work on addiction and recovery, psychiatrist David M. Sack says, “Recovery requires a leap of faith, backed by the willingness to admit a problem and take responsibility for your choices along with the motivation to work a program of recovery.” If you keep reading Dr. Sack’s writings, you see that he helps us to understand that recovery requires a commitment and a relentless pursuit of that recovery and wholeness. He continues, “Willpower isn’t the way into addiction, but it is part of the way out of addiction.”
The Bible puts it this way in James 2:26, “Faith without works is dead.” We can look to the woman Jesus encounters at Jacob’s well as an example of this principle. She was so ready to be free from her past, and she was so excited about her future, that she was no longer willing to be imprisoned by her situation. She hears the message about living water, and she pursues that living water so she will never thirst again. Like her, maybe you are wanting to pursue wholeness as well.
If so, you’ve got to resolve within yourself that you will not let your season of brokenness be the end of your story. I don’t know how long this woman had been in her situation, but that day she decided to do better, to be better, and to have better. Listen, child of God, you must choose better if you want to have better. Wholeness is a choice.
