Let It Go
The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?” The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.” When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well. (Exodus 2:13-15)
After Moses had killed an Egyptian man for beating a Hebrew the day before, he tried to intervene in another conflict between two Hebrews. However, these two men thought Moses was being a hypocrite because he had killed the Egyptian. So when Pharaoh found about this, he sought to kill Moses.
The anger Moses had acted on ended up hurting himself more than it hurt anyone else, and the same can be true for us when we act on our own anger. It’s like holding a hot comb with the intent of throwing it at another person. In the end, you’re the one who is going to get burned.
In this case, the best thing you can do is to let it go. This is what Moses did when he fled to Midian. He didn’t try to go up against Pharaoh. He didn’t stay put in a negative, harmful atmosphere. Instead, he went to sit by a well. I love this picture because a well is a source of water, a place to find refreshment and replenishment. It was there that he rested, and he set an example for us of what we should do when we’re stuck in a place of anger.
Don’t continue to surround yourself with toxic people and situations. Don’t consistently put yourself in a position to act out of anger. Instead, go the Lord, the source of Living Water, and find refreshment and replenishment for your soul. Only then will you find peace to replace the anger that used to take up so much space in your heart.
