Getting Fed
So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls. And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching… (Acts 2:41-42a)
A while back I went to the grocery store to get some food. My fridge and pantry were getting low, and I needed to restock my food supply to get me through another couple of weeks. When I went to the grocery store on this particular day, many of the shelves were bare, and much of the remaining food had spoiled. I thought, “What good is it to have a grocery store, an establishment designed to feed people, with no groceries on the shelves, and where people can’t get fed?”
It then dawned on me that what a grocery store is to the physical body, the church is supposed to be for the spiritual body. In order for people to know the will of God for their lives, they want to be able to come to their church and get fed the spiritual food they need.
The people of the Early Church understood this, as they came to church excited about the Word of God. On two occasions in Acts chapter 2, we get a sense that these believers were dedicated and hence excited about God’s Word. They were hungry for truth, and they knew where they could go to get it.
We should have the same mentality when it comes to our own experience with church. We should have a love and a hunger for the Word of God, and we should be going to a church that feeds us in a way that satisfies that hunger. If you’re not getting fed, you’ll begin to experience spiritual malnourishment, and that’s a dangerous state to be in.
With that in mind, I would encourage you to ask yourself: Is my church feeding me spiritually? Do I have a love, an excitement, and a hunger for the Word of God that my church is encouraging and satisfying? If not, my prayer is that you would go to the Lord and ask Him to give you guidance and direction on what your next step is within the church so that your hunger and excitement for His Word will be renewed.
