Life Goes On
The one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
There was a once a doctor who entered the hospital in a hurry after being called in for an emergency surgery on a child. He had answered the call as quickly as he could, changed his clothes, and headed to the operating room. On his way, he found the boy’s father pacing in the hallway waiting for the doctor. Upon seeing him, the father yelled, “Why have you taken all this time to come? Don’t you know my son’s life is in danger?”
The doctor smiled and said, “I’m sorry, I wasn’t already at the hospital, but I came as quick as I could. Now please calm down so that I can do my work and not delay treatment to your son any longer.” The father replied, “Calm down? What if this was your son right now? Would you be able to calm down?”
The doctor smiled empathetically and walked in to see the patient. The surgery took several hours, but the doctor finally came out and happily said, “Your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father to reply, he took off running down the hall and told him to talk to the nurse if he had any questions.
“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn’t wait a few minutes to answer my questions about my son?” the father asked the nurse. She looked at him with tears streaming down her face and said, “His son died last week in a car accident. He was at the funeral when we called him for your son’s surgery. So now that he’s saved your son’s life, he’s going to back to finish grieving for his own son.”
This is the story of a man, the doctor, who was able to pull himself together to do what he was called to do in the midst of his own tragedy. He understood that no matter the difficulty and the pain, life goes on. Regardless of where you are and what you’re going through, life doesn’t end with one disappointment, one decision, or one let down.
We live in a world where things don’t often turn out eh way we desire or thought they would. Jobs terminate, marriages end, illness sets in. But the measure of a believer is how we handle life’s trials, not if they come, but when they come.
With that in mind, we must ask ourselves, are we going to fold and crumble under the pressure of life’s hardships? Are we going to yield to temptation? Are we going to be in bondage to outside influences and perceptions? Or are we going to stand strong in the Lord? Are we going to persevere with the power of the Holy Spirit? And are we going to strive to believe that there is a brightside somewhere?
