Keep the Light On
“And give no opportunity to the devil.” - Ephesians 4:27
Anger is a powerful emotion. It’s natural to feel angry when things don’t go as expected, when we’re hurt, or when we feel wronged. But anger can be destructive if we don’t deal with it properly. Paul’s advice is to keep your anger exposed to the light. Don’t bury it. Don’t let it simmer in the dark, because when you do, you’re giving the enemy a foothold in your life.
Imagine anger like a pot on the stove. If you keep the lid on it, it will eventually boil over, creating more damage than if you had dealt with it early. The same goes for our emotions. If you nurse your anger, let it fester, and ignore it, it can change you.
Paul is warning us against that very thing. When you let anger sit in the darkness of your heart, it can take root and grow, affecting not just your actions but your thoughts and attitude. It can destroy relationships, businesses, marriages, and even your own peace. We’ve all been there, where one small thing triggers a flood of anger that’s been building up for months or even years. That’s why Paul says, “Don’t let the sun go down on your anger.”
So, what do you do when you feel the anger rising? You keep it exposed to the light. Bring it into the open. Talk about it, pray about it, seek counseling, read the Word, or worship. The more you expose your anger to the light of Jesus, the less power it has over you. Don’t let the darkness take control.
When you’re on the edge of losing it, pause and see yourself happening. Recognize when you're about to snap, and step away. Take a break, regain your composure, and remember that the goal is not just to avoid sinning but to deal with the root of your anger in a healthy way.
Just like Arthur Ashe walked away from a match to avoid losing control, sometimes we need to put down our racket and walk away from the situation before it escalates. When your anger is under the light of Christ, it won’t get the best of you. Keep it exposed, keep it in check, and you’ll keep the enemy from gaining a foothold in your life.
