Feed Your Faith
"Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” - 1 Peter 1:13
Chronic fear can cloud our judgment and leave us making decisions we wouldn’t normally consider. When fear is in control, rational thinking often takes a back seat. Timothy, facing the challenges of ministry and persecution, was concerned that his own fear might cause him to make poor decisions. Sound familiar? Many of us have felt the weight of fear, making us hesitate or act in ways that don’t align with our best judgment.
Paul’s words to Timothy are just as relevant today: God has given us a spirit not of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. When we lean into self-discipline and exercise good judgment, we can manage our fears.
The more we cultivate self-discipline, the more we gain the ability to make decisions based on wisdom, not fear. Self-control, a fruit of the Spirit, allows us to operate with a sound mind, free from the chaos that fear brings. A sound mind knows that God has not brought us this far to leave us. It trusts that if God is with us, He will guide us through whatever challenges come our way.
When fear threatens to take control, we can remind ourselves of God’s promises. A sound mind remembers that if God has called us to something, He will equip us to handle it. It knows that God’s Word is a reliable foundation, offering wisdom and clarity when we need it most. When your fear starts to rise, choose to respond with faith. We don’t have to let fear dictate our actions. Instead, we can walk forward with confidence, trusting that God has given us everything we need to live out the life He has planned for us.
Max Lucado’s words ring true: “Feed your fears, and your faith will starve. Feed your faith, and your fear will leave.” When we choose to feed our faith with the truth of God’s Word, fear loses its grip. We don’t have to be controlled by fear. With God’s power, love, and self-control, we can stand firm and move forward in faith.
