What is it Telling You?
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
Fear comes in many forms. On one end of the spectrum, there’s constructive fear, fear that helps us avoid danger and make better decisions. On the other end, there’s chronic fear, the kind that paralyzes and controls us. Paul’s message to Timothy was clear: it's not about whether we experience fear, but about whether fear takes control of us. Fear can be a helpful signal, but when it becomes chronic, it can destroy our peace, our joy, and our ability to move forward in life.
Think about the difference between healthy fear and harmful fear. Healthy fear might alert you to a dangerous situation, like a medical emergency, a toxic relationship, or a threat to your safety. It serves as a warning and motivates you to act; whether it’s seeking help, making changes, or taking precautions.
But when fear becomes chronic, it consumes you. It makes you feel paralyzed, unable to move, and trapped in a cycle of anxiety. It affects your mind, your body, and your spirit. You might feel like you can’t enjoy life anymore—no laughing, no singing, no praying. Fear, when it’s allowed to take over, can rob you of everything good in life.
So, how do you discern what kind of fear you’re experiencing? Ask yourself: “What is this fear trying to tell me?” Is it pointing out a threat that I need to avoid, or is it trying to control me? Is it helping me protect myself or pushing me toward positive action? If it’s paralyzing you, then it’s time to address it. It’s important to realize that feeling fear isn’t a sin or a sign of weakness.
Fear is a tool that God gave us to alert us to danger and help us stay safe. In fact, Proverbs 9:10 tells us that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This kind of fear isn’t about terror; it’s about awe and reverence, drawing us closer to God and reorienting our focus.
It’s essential to identify the type of fear you’re dealing with, healthy or harmful, so you can understand its source and take action. God has not given us the spirit of fear, but the spirit of power, love, and self-control. Don’t let fear rule your life. Use it as a tool to guide you, not as a force to cripple you.
