Don’t Be Scurred
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
Imagine facing the darkest, most uncertain moment of your life. That’s exactly what Paul was experiencing when he wrote his second letter to Timothy. Imprisoned in a Roman dungeon, awaiting his impending death, Paul knew the church was under severe threat. Emperor Nero’s madness was wreaking havoc across the empire, and Christians were being hunted, persecuted, and executed.
Timothy, leading the church in Ephesus, must have felt the weight of the world on his shoulders. He was asking himself some tough questions: Can I continue to preach when just saying the name of Jesus could cost me my life? How can I stand firm when the danger is so real and so close?
Paul knew fear was creeping into Timothy’s heart, and so he wrote to encourage him. He didn’t sugarcoat the situation. He didn’t tell him it was going to be easy. But he did tell him something crucial: Don’t be scurred. Fear, no matter how overwhelming, doesn’t have to rule your life. Paul reminded Timothy that God didn’t give him a spirit of fear but one of power, love, and a sound mind. Fear is natural in the face of adversity, but it’s not from God. Instead, God equips us to face fear with strength, with love, and with clear thinking.
Think about your own life for a moment. What mountains are you facing? What overwhelming odds make you want to quit, to give up, or to retreat into safety? When fear starts to grip your heart, remember Paul’s words. You have been given a spirit of power, not weakness. A spirit of love, not anxiety. A spirit of soundness of mind, not confusion or panic. You can face whatever comes your way, not because you’re strong enough on your own, but because God is with you, equipping you to stand firm.
The next time you feel that fear rising up, take a deep breath and recognize it for what it is: an obstacle, not a reason to give up. Don’t let fear stop you. Don’t be scurred. You have the power to keep going. You have the strength to push through. And with God’s help, you will overcome.
