Facing the Fear of the Unknown
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10
There’s a powerful story about a criminal who, when faced with the choice between being hung by a rope or walking through a mysterious iron door, chose the rope. As the noose was slipping around his neck, he asked the king what was behind the door. The king laughed and explained that behind that door was freedom, but the criminal, driven by fear of the unknown, chose the rope instead. It’s a story that many of us can relate to in some way. Fear often drives us to choose what we know, even if it’s painful or limiting, rather than face the unknown that might bring freedom or change.
Fear is a powerful emotion, and it can shape our choices in ways we might not even realize. Fear of the unknown, as H.P. Lovecraft said, is one of the strongest fears we face. It’s easier to stay with the familiar, even if it’s not the best for us, than to step into something uncertain. How many times have you stayed in a situation, a job, or a habit simply because it was known? The idea of change, even positive change, can feel too overwhelming, and fear keeps us stuck.
But God calls us to move beyond that fear. In Isaiah 41:10, He promises to be with us, to strengthen us, and to help us through every uncertain moment. When you’re faced with a choice between the known and the unknown, between what feels safe and what could lead to freedom, remember that you don’t have to face it alone. God’s presence in your life means that fear doesn’t have to control your decisions.
It’s easy to let fear paralyze us, to stick with what’s comfortable even when it’s not healthy. But fear can rob you of peace, joy, and the potential for growth. Instead of choosing the proverbial rope, choose to trust in God’s promises.
Let His strength be the courage you need to walk through the unknown and experience the freedom He offers. How you face your fears will shape the rest of your life. Choose faith over fear, and trust that God is with you every step of the way.
