Tell the Truth About Where You Are
"And he said to the vinedresser, ‘Look, for three years now I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and I find none. Cut it down. Why should it use up the ground?’" - Luke 13:7
In the parable of the unproductive fig tree, Jesus paints a picture of a tree that’s been planted but isn’t producing any fruit. After three years of waiting, the landowner finally comes to terms with the fact that the tree isn’t living up to its potential. This parable is a powerful reminder for us to take an honest look at our own lives. Are there areas where we’re not producing fruit? Are we stuck in unproductive patterns, simply “planted” but not growing?
The truth is, we can all find areas of our lives that are stagnant. Maybe it’s a relationship that’s not flourishing, a job where you’re just going through the motions, or unhealthy habits that keep pulling you back.
Like the tree in the parable, we might be occupying space, but we aren’t truly living out God’s purpose for our lives. Yet, acknowledging this truth can be difficult. It’s easier to stay comfortable, to settle for less than God’s best, rather than face the hard reality that we’re stuck.
Jesus calls us to a place of radical honesty. It’s not about beating ourselves up or feeling ashamed, it’s about facing the truth so that we can move forward. If you want to experience growth, you need to start by admitting where you are right now.
Maybe you’ve been settling for a mediocre spiritual life, going through the motions without truly connecting with God. Maybe you’re holding onto unhealthy patterns, afraid to change. But until you face those truths, you’ll stay where you are, unproductive and unfruitful.
Self-examination requires courage. It means admitting the tough truths: that you need to pray more, read the Word more, or even be more committed in your relationships. But once you’re honest with yourself, the path to growth becomes clearer. You don’t have to stay where you are. God’s desire is for you to grow and flourish, but it all starts with telling the truth about where you are right now.
Take a moment today to reflect on the areas of your life that feel stuck. Where do you need to be honest with yourself? God wants to help you move forward, but first, you must acknowledge where you’re standing.
