Creating Healthy Spaces for Sexuality
"And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." — John 8:32
When we can’t discuss or explore our sexuality in healthy, open ways, it often leads to unhealthy explorations. This lack of open dialogue can cause misunderstanding, confusion, and even trauma. Imagine trying to navigate something as significant as your sexuality without any guidance, surrounded by silence and shame. When you can’t talk about it with your family, your church, or your friends without fear of judgment or condemnation, you’re left to figure it out on your own, often in isolation.
How many of us have struggled through our teenage years and beyond, trying to make sense of our sexual selves without the support of those around us? Many of us have faced this confusion alone, and it’s not just frustrating, it’s damaging. The reality is that the enemy thrives in these areas of silence and confusion, distorting what God intended for good.
Satan doesn’t create; he distorts. He takes what God has made good and twists it into something harmful. Think about it, God created food to nourish and sustain us, but it can be turned into something that causes illness and suffering. Worship was meant to bring us closer to God, yet it can be distorted into idolatry. Music was given to uplift and heal us, but it can be twisted to promote negative messages and unhealthy behaviors. Similarly, sex was created by God for intimacy, pleasure, and procreation, but when it’s shrouded in secrecy and shame, it can be perverted into something that diminishes rather than enhances our lives.
When the church avoids talking about sex, when it avoids addressing the topics of diet, worship, or any aspect of human experience, it leaves a void. This void is filled by misconceptions and distortions, allowing the enemy to shape our understanding in ways that harm rather than heal.
It’s crucial for us to create open, honest spaces where we can discuss and explore these aspects of life without shame. By doing so, we honor God’s creation and ensure that the truth, which sets us free, guides our understanding. Let’s not leave these vital parts of our lives to be distorted. Instead, let’s embrace them with clarity, support, and grace, reflecting the truth and goodness of God’s design.
