Let’s Remove the Stigma Around Sex
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." - Galatians 5:1
The church has long struggled with how to approach the topic of sex, often treating it like something shameful or dangerous. There's a history of seeing sexual desire as an enemy of spiritual growth, something that should be controlled, repressed, or even feared. For many, the conversation about sex has been wrapped in guilt and judgment, leading to feelings of shame that can be hard to shake.
Today, many people feel like their worth and standing with God are tied directly to their sexual choices. The idea that sexual desire is somehow inherently sinful has created a culture where people are labeled and shamed for their desires. In some churches, it seems like the focus on morality is overwhelmingly centered on sexual behavior. This can leave people feeling like they’re under constant scrutiny, worried that one wrong move will separate them from God.
But here’s the thing: the Bible does speak about sex, but not in the obsessive way some might think. When we read scripture, we see far more emphasis on loving your neighbor, showing mercy, and caring for the poor. The Bible is more concerned with how we treat others in our everyday lives than with what happens in private moments. God cares deeply about justice, kindness, and compassion, and these values should shape how we think about everything, including sex.
This doesn’t mean anything goes—just like anything else in life, sex can be misused or become an unhealthy obsession. But it’s not something to be feared or shamed. Sexuality is part of who you are, but it’s not all of who you are. Instead of letting shame take the lead, let’s focus on living in the freedom Christ offers, not bound by the moral policing that so often dominates the conversation. Remember, your walk with God is defined by much more than any single aspect of your life.
