The Joy of Giving
"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." - 2 Corinthians 9:7
When you think about giving, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it a sense of duty, an obligation, or perhaps even reluctance? Too often, giving is seen as a burdensome task, something you do because you have to, not because you want to. But the Bible paints a different picture—a picture of joy, of freedom, and of love.
Think for a moment about the last time you gave a gift to someone you care about. Maybe it was a birthday present, a surprise for a friend, or even just a small act of kindness. Do you remember the joy on their face? Do you remember the warmth in your heart? That’s what giving is meant to feel like. It's not about the size of the gift or the recognition you receive; it's about the joy that flows from a heart filled with love.
God loves a cheerful giver. He delights in seeing you give with joy, not because you’re forced to, but because you genuinely want to bless someone else. When you give with a heart full of love, it reflects God’s own character. After all, God is the ultimate giver. He gave His only Son so that you might have life. His giving was not out of obligation but out of an overflowing love for you.
When we give, we should give cheerfully. It means letting go of any sense of pressure or guilt. It means giving because you want to, not because you feel you have to. It means seeing your act of giving as an opportunity to reflect the love of God in your life. And when you do, you experience a joy that goes beyond mere happiness—a joy that comes from knowing you’re making a difference, no matter how small.
The next time you give, do it with a smile. Let your heart be filled with the same love that moved God to give to you. Remember, it’s not the amount that matters, but the heart behind it. When you give cheerfully, you’re not just blessing someone else; you’re bringing joy to the heart of God.
